PhD Workshop in Ulm

The first in-person PhD workshop of the DFG Priority Program SPP2248 “Polymer-based Batteries” took place in May 2025 at the POLiS Cluster of Excellence in Ulm. Following the initial online kickoff meetings, doctoral researchers, postdocs, and principal investigators met face-to-face for the first time, hosted by Prof. Birgit Esser.

The workshop immediately demonstrated the international and interdisciplinary character of the growing SPP2248 community. With many participants only recently beginning their projects, the atmosphere was marked by openness, curiosity, and lively scientific exchange. Presentations covered topics including covalent organic frameworks, organic radical batteries, tomographic imaging, and sustainable cathode materials.

Scientific talks were complemented by poster sessions, brainstorming activities, and informal networking, all of which encouraged collaborations across institutions and disciplines. An optional tour of the POLiS laboratories showcased state-of-the-art battery research infrastructure and highlighted the technological capabilities available within the consortium.

Beyond its scientific program, the workshop successfully established the foundations of a connected and collaborative research network that would continue to grow throughout the Priority Program.
